A shout-out to classic cartoons from "Golden Age of Animation" and film noir from MGM Studios
...and of course, "LA NOIRE"

Lens flare effect done in Paint Tool SAI using "Screen" layer
BG and
Bucker Roo done by :iconskitsophreninc: (me)
with Paint Tool SAI using custom crayon brush, paintbrush, blur and airbrush

EDIT: Fixed the perspective in the muzzle :la:

This is really great! I'm lovin' this a LOT.
Ok, Bucker Roo looks really nice in this one. He's very nice to look at and it looks well with the composition. Nice job on him.
The background is very nice and so is the black n white,
I only have 2 complaints with it. One is the light from Bucker's lower left. I understand the lamp having it(with good color btw), but not on there. Also, the backgrounds look like they were pasted from other pieces that you did, but that's just a nitpick. So, all in all, I love the piece, and I feel like its one of your best. Great job!

Ok so first, I love the scenery! It's not too crammed, so it doesn't take the attention from the character, yet it's not too dim! I like how you did the black and white, but the lamp is shining a small amount of color! That's just cool!
The only thing bothering me (and this is my opinion) is the way his whole head is tilted down, yet his nose is still facing towards the screen in a head-on position... It may sound a little picky, but I like it when characters look just right...
Anyway, I love the character, and the idea! All in all, Awesome! :D

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner, man. Things got real heavy around my end. Anyway, THIS IS FANTASTIC! And those effects, just great stuff! The angle is quite something too; not only does it look great from Roo's perspective but I noticed the building in the background. The angle you chose and how you drew the interior was something I didn't notice my first look. Nice touch~

Wow, this picture is so amazing! It's like... algnlkrngaljeg... I'm sorry, that wasn't exactly constructive but holy hobo this is crazy. The only complaint I have is that the lens flares look really conspicuous because everything else is black and white and I'd say that in general, old film doesn't produce those artifacts but I'm assuming that that was just a stylistic decision (because it's pretty hard to accidentally insert a lens flare, especially considering that you outlined how you did it). But heck, good work. I would envy you but that's just stupid, I'm just too lazy to do anything productive, nun-o-dat natural talent bullshoes.

You're right about old films and the lack of lens flares. I think you know this, but effects like those were considered amateur, or unappealing by producers back then. (I said producers, 'cause most directors lacked creative control over elements like that; on an unrelated note, the Hays Code is another).

I think I should have mentioned this is a 'neo-noir' styled artwork... though, I did mention "a shout-out to", not "tribute".

Pssh, and who else but you says you've got nun-o-dat talent bullshoes? I mean your duck animation is smooth-- it's PERFECT. So far, I couldn't animate something that smooth. Plus, you're on the right track for understanding appeal and "construction".

I'll tell 'ya what, to help you better yourself-- I mean you can already do THAT-- here's a site that could teach you perspective drawing, appealing design, good colors, drawing amazing BGs, and how to draw like the masters of the "Golden Age of Animation". It's an animation school for free. (And thanks to this site, I could do stuff like this and I only started drawing back at August/Oct. LAST YEAR).

Woah, it's alright; I wasn't really expecting a reply. Yeah, I know what you mean though, it's just a general homage as opposed to an emulation of film noir. The thing is, with the duck animation, the individual drawings aren't very good at all; I specifically made it out of really basic shapes. It's only smooth because of lots of frame-by-frame interpolation, if you just do heaps of inbetweening using onion skinning, eventually it becomes smooth. Thanks for the encouragement though, it means a lot to me. I'll be sure to check out that link.
